Cocooning refers to the practice of notifying the neighbors surrounding a recent break and enter victim. The aim is to encourage residents to be more vigilant about their security, to report incidents and suspicious behavior to the Police, and to actively participate in crime prevention programs. It encourages a form of natural surveillance, whereby neighbors are more alert to the activity in their street. Several studies have demonstrated success in reducing the incidence of burglary by employing this practice.
